MM2S032: Season 3, Episode 2
By: Ken Boone A couple of weeks ago, my sister-in-law Kay was asked to give the keynote speech for her 50th High School reunion. Since she attended a parochial school, the speech was really a sermon for the morning worship service. Celia and I were not able to attend the event, so we watched the live stream. I also downloaded the mp4 file for posterity. Since Kay and her husband Rick live in Idaho, we don't get to see them often enough. So, we jumped at the chance to have lunch with them before that jumped on a flight from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. The thing that I admire most about Kay and Rick is that, although they are good Christians, they don't shove their lifestyle on anyone else. For Celia and me, that's a good thing. You see, I also see myself as a good Christian, just not a good (fill in the name of a particular religion). While I can't speak for my wife, I would guess that she feels the same way as I do. A lot of people who do the whole God/church thing have conflicted relationships with their Higher Power(s). That includes me! Why Did I Put “Going Back to Church” on My List? (Two Reasons) 1. I Need to Fix the “Separate but Not Equal” Component in Church
2. Address the “Pecking Order” Thing and Where We Ranked in it?
Feeling that neither one of us felt like we fit into that structure (even though we both spent a lot of time “out front” in high-profile roles, why would we want to go back for more? And why did I include attending church services again as item 8 on my list of New Year's Resolutions? Well, let's find out. 10 Reasons Americans Go to Church – and 9 Reasons They Don't WTKR Channel 3, covering Hampton Road, VA and Northeastern NC Here are the top 10 reasons given by Americans who attend religious services at least once a month, according to the Pew Research Center. My Reasons for Going to Church – and My Reasons for Not Going So why does “going back to church” make list of New Year's Resolutions? I've got 10 reasons 5 in favor and 5 against attending! Here are my 5 reasons for wanting to attend:
Here are the top 5 reasons I would skip regular religious services:
Needless to say, my sister-in-law hit it out of the park with her keynote speech! Celia and I felt bad that we were not able to attend the event, but happy that we watched the live stream. The church that we now want to attend doesn't need us to do anything but take a seat and enjoy the show! They will not give us the hard sell to join, or pressure us to make donations. And when they have Communion, they don't check to see if you have a valid ID. All you have to do is be in attendance and you'll be welcome to partake. In the past, we attended on a semi-regular basis. Health issues and COVID kept us away for over two years. Now that we're feeling fine, are vaccinated and boosted, we can't wait to return. And that's why it is Item 8 on my New Year's Resolution list! Maybe we'll get back on stage again, maybe we won't. But walking through the door and finding a seat in the back row is a good first step! CAN I GET AN AMEN?!?!?! Today's Quote “Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.” Billy Sunday – American Evangelist and Former Major League Baseball Player
